Mitchell College Holding Fifth Annual Dove Self-Esteem Workshop

New London campus hosts event on body image perception

For the fifth year, Mitchell College will host the Dove Self-Esteem Workshop for young girls.

The event will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday in the first level of the Nathan Hale classroom building. The program is free, open to girls between the ages of eight and 12 who are accompanied by an adult female mentor, and will last about 90 minutes. It is presented by students in the college's Behavioral Science Club and Psychology of Women class, with the curriculum provided by the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty.

“Girls face more pressure than ever to fit the stereotypically defined image of beauty: physical perfection," said Jennifer Mauro, faculty advisor of the Behavioral Science Club. "Through this workshop, we can help change the way girls perceive these images by engaging them and their adult female mentors in positive, thought-provoking discussions and activities.”

The goal of the program is to promote self-esteem through education of a wider definition of beauty. It also aims to have students use the knowledge from the course or club to assist in the discussions.

An RSVP is recommended, and people may register by contacting Mauro at 860-701-7719 or Mauro_j@mitchell.edu. Guests should park on Montauk Ave. or in the Pequot Ave. parking lot.
