New London High School Recognized for Top Naval Training Program

It was the second year in a row that the training program has earned the honor.

NEW LONDON, CT — The Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) unit at New London Multi-Magnet High School has been named a Distinguished Unit for 2025, marking the second consecutive year it has received the honor, according to a statement.

The award recognizes NJROTC programs that demonstrate excellence in academics, leadership, and community service. New London’s unit was also selected to host the Area One Drone Competition and lead Basic Leadership Training for other programs in the region.

“We want to extend our sincere congratulations to our students for earning this extraordinary accolade and for distinguishing themselves among the best in the NJROTC program,” Superintendent Cynthia Ritchie said in a statement. “The leadership of Lieutenant Commander Matteucci and the cadets’ outstanding commitment and dedication are a source of pride to the entire Whaler community. "

The unit, consisting of 142 cadets, is led by retired Navy Lieutenant Commander Carl Matteucci, who serves as the Senior Naval Science Instructor.

In addition to training and competitions, the New London NJROTC program is involved in mentoring other cadet units across Connecticut. The program is part of a national initiative sponsored by the U.S. Navy and staffed by retired personnel from the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

The curriculum focuses on citizenship, leadership, and maritime heritage, with instruction supported by field trips, athletics, and community service.

New London Public Schools is the state’s only all-magnet school district, offering specialized programs in international education, visual and performing arts, and STEM. The district includes Connecticut’s only year-round, multi-aged, multi-session school model.

Students from more than 40 towns and 25 school districts attend New London’s magnet programs.
