New London Rally To Protect Social Security Draws 'Concerned Residents'

Protesters came out due to the ongoing cuts to the federal government and the Social Security Administration.

NEW LONDON, CT — More than 100 concerned residents rallied outside the New London Social Security Administration office Wednesday, according to a statement from U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney (D-2).

The rally was in response to the Trump administration's "ongoing cuts and attacks on (social security)," according to the statement.

Six of 10 regional Social Security offices around the country have been shuttered, leading to 7,000 job losses.

"These extreme cuts have led to worse service for beneficiaries, including long waits and website crashes, which will prevent Americans from receiving the benefits they paid for throughout their working years," the statement reads.

Courtney also held a town hall in Old Saybrook on Wednesday.

“Over the last ninety days my office has received an avalanche of calls from people who are terrified watching what Elon Musk’s DOGE is doing to the Social Security system," Courtney said. "If you listen to Elon Musk and you see what DOGE is doing, there is a clear effort to harm Social Security. Eastern Connecticut has the largest number of beneficiaries – 164,000 people – compared to the rest of the state and we will not standby and let that happen.”
