New London Students Honored By Connecticut Arts Association

Two New London Multi-Magnet High School seniors were among the honorees at the 30th annual Connecticut High School Outstanding Arts Awards.

NEW LONDON, CT — New London Multi-Magnet High School seniors Maria Serrano and Alyana Sanderson were among the honorees at the 30th annual Connecticut High School Outstanding Arts Awards Banquet, according to a statement from the district.

The event was organized by the Connecticut Association of Schools and showcases two talented seniors from each member high school who excel in performing and visual arts and possess qualities of scholarship and leadership.

Serrano was nominated by her theater teacher, Lura Hepler, for her "notable and consistent theatrical performances throughout her college career," according to the statement.

Sanderson was nominated by her visual arts teacher, Catherine Cindrich, for "her achievements as a visual artist in several mediums, a leader in group projects at the Mystic Museum collaboration and Lyman Allan Museum installation, and the Arts Club," the statement reads.

“I am thrilled and proud to extend my congratulations to Maria and Alayna for this prestigious honor that recognizes their remarkable talents, academic excellence and leadership qualities and am grateful to CAS for this occasion that allows students to shine," Janet Farquhar, director of magnet pathways for New London Public Schools, said in a statement.

“As a magnet district, I am so pleased that we can offer students opportunities to explore their creative interests, gain hands on experience and enhance their education through our NLPS Visual and Performing Arts pathway."

New London Public Schools is Connecticut’s first and only all-magnet school district consisting of three magnet pathways: Visual and Performing Arts; International Education; and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

New London enrolls students from over 40 towns and 25 sending school districts. A magnet school is a public school offering a unique curriculum and specialized programs designed to attract a more diverse student body from throughout the region.
