Unregistered Vehicles Targeted in New London Tax Sweep
The city has hired a firm to crack down on vehicle owners who have avoided paying taxes.
NEW LONDON, CT — The City of New London will target those with unregistered vehicles who have avoided paying taxes in a new initiative.
The city is partnering with Municipal Tax Services LLC, a Shelton firm, to "uncover vehicles that have slipped through the cracks and avoided New London taxes due to their omission from the city’s motor vehicle grand list," according to a statement posted on Facebook.
Municipal Tax Services and police will conduct field work, traversing the city to identify vehicles that are not registered with the state Department of Motor Vehicles, including out-of-state and unregistered vehicles.

By law, any motor vehicle that "in the normal course of operation, most frequently leaves from and returns to or remains in a town in this state" is subject to municipal taxes.
"To avoid any unpleasant surprises, the city urges all vehicle owners to verify the accuracy of their registration status before this program begins on June 1, 2025," the city advised.

When the city discovers unregistered vehicles, the owners will receive a letter. They will be given 30 days to respond and appeal the assessment.
"There is no need to be concerned about those who have already reported their unregistered vehicles in their personal property declaration," the city wrote. "We appreciate your cooperation in this vital initiative to support fair and equitable taxation, so that all residents can continue to benefit from the municipal services offered in our community."
