Arson Cause of Newtown Mansion Fire: Police Chief

The 7,300 square foot property on Castle Hill Road in Newtown was destroyed last month in the blaze.

Newtown, CT — Chief Viadero informed the Newtown Police Commissioners at their last meeting that the recent fire at the 44 Castle Hill Road Mansion was believed to be arson.

Viadero said there were several incidents for two weeks prior to the fire and that the owner had installed a surveillance camera.

Fire crews were called to the scene at approximately 2 a.m. on May 25, 2016.

According to a post on Blogger, the 7,300 square foot property is set on 136 acres and was built in 1908. The property is set on 1,600 water frontage on Taunton Pond. The website states the home belongs to the Bridgeport Diocese.

No further details were provided by the Police Commission.
