CAPT Scores Rise, CMT Scores Similar For North Branford

Standardized test scores are in for North Branford, and while the numbers are comparable in the elementary schools and middle school to last year's totals, high school scores are up

Tuesday, the Connecticut Department of Education released the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) and the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) scores for all Connecticut school districts. On the CAPT test, which is given to 10th graders, North Branford students improved, with at least 88 percent of students achieving proficiency in all subjects.

The CMTs scores, meanwhile, were relatively similar to last year's total. In some grades, there were increases, in other grades decreases, but overall the scores were comparable to last year's totals.

North Branford's scores were above the state averages across the board, and in some cases were well above the state average. For example, the average school district in Connecticut in 2013 had 68.5 percent of its students earn goal and 91.6 percent were labeled proficient on the CAPT in science. In North Branford, 77.8 percent of students earned goal and 97.5 percent of students were labeled proficient in science this year.

The CMTs are administered to all students from grade three to grade eight. Students are tested in math, reading and writing, and in middle school, they are tested in science as well.

Students are labeled based on their performance. The labels, in descending order, are advanced, goal, proficient, basic and below basic.
