Lifelong North Branford Resident Celebrated By Town On 105th Birthday

Born Sept. 19, 1919, Evelyn Surprenant, last year, at 104, took a ride on a motorcycle and swam in Long Island Sound.

NORTH BRANFORD, CT — Born Sept. 19, 1919, Evelyn Surprenant is a life-long North Branford resident who, while her husband served in World War Two, worked for A.C. Gilbert.

Last week, Mayor Rose Angeloni presented a citation from the North Branford Town Council congratulating Evelyn on her 105th birthday.

She married Emerson Surprenant in 1941, and they have four children. In addition to working for A.C. Gilbert during the war, she later worked for McKesson and Robbins, and North Branford Public Schools. Her hobbies include riding motorcycles, swimming, gardening, sewing, quilting, and baking.

At the age of 104, she took a ride on a motorcycle and swam in Long Island Sound.

"The name Surprenant means 'surprise' and Evelyn is just as surprised as everyone else that she continues to enjoy life," North Branford Town Manager Michael Downes said. "She says her secret to long life is to 'Just be kind to everyone and love your family,' which is evident in the weekly Sunday dinner ritual she enjoys with her family, where she maintains her place at the head of the table."
