Suspicious Package Investigation Prompts Road Closures In Norwalk: UPDATE

NORWALK, CT — A suspicious package found outside a building in Norwalk prompted the closure of two nearby roads Tuesday morning, according to police.

In a news release, Police Lt. Tomasz Podgorski said officers were called to Westport Avenue around 9:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a suspicious package found outside a building.

According to Podgorski, the caller reported seeing a bright green package with red wires protruding out of it.

Officers secured the area and established a perimeter while the Stamford Police Department Bomb Squad was notified and responded to assist, Podgorski said.

The investigation revealed the item was a battery pack and did not pose a threat, according to Podgorski.

A Norwalk Police Department Explosive Detection Dog and his handler also conducted a precautionary sweep of the surrounding area, however no additional suspicious items were located, Podgorski said.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident, according to Podgorski.

The department thanked Stamford police for their assistance, as well as drivers and residents for their patience during the investigation.

"We remind residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity immediately," Podgorski said in a news release. "If you see something, say something."

Earlier in the day, police announced on Facebook officers were conducting an investigation in the area of Westport Avenue and Strawberry Hill Avenue, during which Westport Avenue was closed in both directions and Strawberry Hill Avenue was closed between County Street and Wolfpit Avenue.

Around 10:30 a.m., police announced in an updated Facebook post "the roads in the area have been opened to all traffic and there is no threat to the public. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding."
