NORWALK, CT — The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk invites visitors to embark on its seal-spotting and birding cruises beginning Jan. 10 and offered most weekends through March.

According to a news release provided by the aquarium, these two-hour cruises aboard the R/V Sound Explorer offer a rare opportunity to witness the seasonal wildlife that calls Long Island Sound home during the colder months.

Guests will journey through the Norwalk Islands in search of harbor and grey seals hauled out on the many low-lying rocks scattered among the islands, according to the aquarium.

Aquarium educators will share insights into these federally protected marine mammals and help to identify waterfowl, such as buffleheads, mergansers, long-tailed ducks and loons, according to the aquarium.

"People are always amazed to learn that seals and these incredible birds are right here in our backyard," Nicki Rosenfeld, director of vessel operations and programs at the aquarium, said in a news release. "It's like a winter safari on the Sound — an unforgettable experience to see these animals in their natural environment."

Binoculars are provided, but guests can bring their own and their cameras to capture the unforgettable sights, according to the aquarium.

Cruises will depart from the aquarium's dock at 90 Water Street, which is a 7-10-minute walk from the aquarium's main entrance.

Cruise schedules follow the low tides, so departure times change from weekend to weekend, according to the aquarium.
