High-End Extended Stay Hotel Pitched in Orange

In other news the PZC made its feelings known about a proposed affordable housing project pitched for the town.

ORANGE, CT — A developer is seeking approval to construct a 122-room, high-end extended stay Homewood Suites by Hilton hotel at 99 Marsh Hill Road, the New Haven Register reports. The hotel would be near Yale's West campus and would be a four-story hotel, the Register adds.

The hotel would include a pool, fitness room, outdoor plaza and a meeting room area. And in another proposal, the zoning commission is expected to deny a proposal for 60 apartments filed under the state's affordable housing statute. The project has been pitched for 65-69 Marsh Hill Road. The project also includes a business component too.

Town officials say that the property is zoned light industrial and they are worried if it's approved it would negatively impact that zone, the Register reports.

The state's affordable housing statute allows developers to circumvent local zoning laws unless a community's housing stock is defined at 10 percent according to the state. Municipalities are only able to deny affordable housing projects if health and safety concerns are documented and developers almost always win on appeal.
