Girl Scouts of Connecticut Unveils New Accessible Summer Camp

-RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY AT CAMP AN-SE-OX SLATED FOR JUNE 2ND -

Girl Scouts have always been a force of nature and now, one of the organization’s highly-anticipated day camps is offering members of all ages and abilities more outdoor adventures this upcoming summer season! Specifically, Camp An-Se-Ox in Oxford, CT, is unveiling its major structural upgrades which include a zero-entry pool, a heated pool house, a heated and air-conditioned yurt, a fully accessible outdoor program pavilion, a new archery and slingshot range and parking lot and access road expansion, at an official ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, June 2, 2024 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

“Girl Scouts wouldn't be Girl Scouts without the great outdoors- it’s one of our four primary pillars where girls make new friends, build campfires, hike trails and connect with the world around them,” said Elicia Pegues Spearman, Esq., chief executive officer at Girl Scouts of Connecticut. “Camp An-Se-Ox’s major transformation ensures that all Girl Scouts can enjoy everything that the camp offers for decades to come.”

Camp An-Se-Ox is one of four properties that have been part of GSOFCT’s long-term property plan. To date, the Oxford-based day camp has required the greatest amount of investment by adding features to the camp experience for youth members of all ages and abilities.

Specific enhancements include:

  • A zero-entry pool design with accessible entry points throughout the perimeter, which allows youth members to build water safety and swimming skills before progressing to boating and other water activities at the Yankee Trails waterfront.
  • An accessible ramp on the yurt building, which can house 24 campers comfortably year-round, as it has heat and air conditioning.
  • A year-round, accessible, heated pool house with showers, changing areas, and bathrooms.
  • A new outdoor program pavilion containing two working fireplaces, charcoal/wood cooking pits, built-in counter spaces, a bathroom, lighting and picnic tables with seating for 100.
  • Improvements to the archery and slingshot ranges where youth members can learn safety skills as they grow from slingshot to archery activities and hatchet-throwing as older Girl Scouts.

“Our focus for Camp An-Se-Ox grew out of direct feedback from membership, as well as the council’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in every Girl Scout space,” adds Spearman. “We hope that all Girl Scout supporters and the public will join us to officially unveil this modern amenity in the majestic Connecticut woods on June 2nd.”
