Oxford Historical Society Establishes New Funds

The Connecticut Community Foundation has provided funds to ensure the preservation of the museum for generations to come.

The Oxford Historical Society has announced the establishment of a special Donor-Advised Fund to support the preservation of the Society's museum. The Twitchell-Rowland Homestead was built in the 1750's by Joseph Twitchell on Christian Street. Faced with demolition in 2006, the Society successfully moved the building to donated land on Towner Lane for permanent preservation.

Intensive fund-raising and volunteer work enabled the Society to open the building as a history education center and museum in 2012. The Society now seeks to assure that the building will be cared for and maintained as a public resource for generations to come. To fulfill that goal, the Society chose the Connecticut Community Foundation to oversee designated funds that will be available for the major non-recurring expenses the Society will face in the future.

The Connecticut Community Foundation provides professional management of the Society's financial assets. Individual donations, legacies and bequests can all be designated for the fund. The Society has established the fund with more than $2,000 with gifts raised through the GreatGive and GiveLocal online donation drives and the 2015 and 2016 Annual Peach Festivals.

The fund will be invested to provide money for non-recurring expenses at the Homestead, especially the large capital expenses that come with long-term maintenance. Management by the Connecticut Community Foundation will insure that these assets are available when the Society needs them.

As the fund grows, it will help support the Society when major repairs or upgrades, such as a new heating system, roof repair or replacement, or new siding, are needed. In addition, we have long dreamed of a barn to provide additional display and storage space. Applying the fund to these projects will insure the Society's ability to preserve the rural atmosphere of Oxford's history and heritage.

The Society will be participating in a Giving Tuesday donation program on November 29, as a kick-off to building up our donor advised fund to meet future needs. Those seeking additional information may call the Dorothy DeBisschop at 203-888-4159 or visit www.oxford-historical-society.org.
