Roots to Radiance: ECC’s Diwali Mela Shines Bright
A Vibrant Celebration of Culture, Community, and Togetherness - By Krishaa Bhattacharjee
Diwali, the festival of lights, stands as a powerful reminder that even in difficult times, light can overcome darkness and hope can guide us forward. Families celebrate by lighting diyas, sharing sweets, and honoring traditions that have connected generations for thousands of years. It is a celebration of renewal, gratitude, and unity.
The ECC Diwali Mela organized by Ekta Community Center (ECC) was held on October 4th at the Ridgefield Recreational Center, marking ECC’s third annual Diwali celebration. Participants from across Connecticut and New York came together not only to celebrate, but to build a sense of community rooted in shared culture and mutual respect. The mela created an atmosphere filled with color, warmth, and connection, inviting people from all backgrounds to experience the joy and openness of the festival.
Ekta, which means “unity” in multiple Indian languages, is dedicated to fostering cultural awareness, inclusivity, and service. As an organization, ECC’s mission is to create a welcoming space where Indian and South Asian families can connect, while also building bridges with the larger community. Their work includes cultural education, volunteer initiatives, youth leadership programs, and efforts to promote understanding across generations. At the Diwali mela, ECC highlighted how festivals like Diwali are more than celebrations; they are opportunities to preserve heritage, empower young people, and strengthen the bonds that hold a community together.
