The Town of Southbury is seeking a friendly, customer-focused individual to join the Southbury Public Library as a Part-Time Library Assistant. This position offers an opportunity to support both the Adult and Children’s Departments while helping patrons access library services and resources.

Position Details:

Hours: 14 per week

Pay Rate: $18.13 per hour

Schedule:

Monday: 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM (Adult Department)
Thursday: 4:30 PM - 9:00 PM (Adult Department
Saturday: 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM (Children’s Department)

Responsibilities:

  • Greet and assist patrons at the circulation desk and by phone
  • Help patrons locate books and other materials
  • Perform check-in/check-out and other circulation tasks using the library’s computerized system
  • Issue library cards, renew materials, place holds, and process overdue notices
  • Collect payments for lost or damaged items
  • Support children’s programs and assist with library displays
  • Guide patrons in using computers, the catalog and digital resources
  • Provide basic reader advisory and research assistance when reference staff are

    unavailable

  • Skills and Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with library systems and classification methods
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with the public in a professional and courteous manner
  • Basic knowledge of database systems and data entry procedures
  • Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED and 1-2 years of experience in administration, library services, or customer service. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
