Free Summer Lunch Program Expands In Southington

A Southington nonprofit this week kicked off an expanded summer lunch program for local schoolchildren.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A local organization dedicated to combating food insecurity has kicked off an expanded summer lunch program that helps Southington children enjoy a healthy meal over the summer.

Southington-based "Bread for Life" started its summer lunch program on Monday, June 23, and it will continue Monday to Friday through Aug. 15.

The expanded program is courtesy of help from the Southington Public School System and the South Central Health District in Southington, Bread for Life announced.

On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, free lunch is available at DePaolo Middle School, 385 Pleasant St., Southington, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

In addition to food, guests can enjoy myriad programs that accompany lunch, including those from Southington community groups and organizations.

On Monday, for example, the Southington Fire Department was at DePaolo for tours of the department's apparatus and visits with children.

"We’re proud to support the Southington Bread For Life Summer Lunch Program," wrote the SFD on Monday. "It’s always an honor to be part of such meaningful community initiatives."

On Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 15, folks can pick up lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bread for Life headquarters at 31 Vermont Ave., Southington.

Free lunches are available to individual Southington children, with group pickups not allowed.
