The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Middle Pond on Grove Street, with derby registration starting at 6:30 a.m. at the nearby clubhouse. The clubhouse will also be serving breakfast sandwiches at 6:30 a.m., followed by pulled pork sandwiches starting at 11 a.m.

Tony Orsini, of the Terryville Fish & Game Club, said the ice is right for another successful derby.

“After all the issues with the pandemic and people not being able to enjoy social gatherings, this is a great opportunity to get together again outside and enjoy a safe, fun activity out on the ice,” he said. “The pond will be well-stocked with trout prior to the fishing derby.”

Last year, the Terryville Fish & Game Club’s ice fishing derby was “a perfect event” according to Orsini, with 120 people attending. The derby began with Ron Plourde, a club member, singing the National Anthem, after which the enthusiastic fishermen got out their drills and lures.

“Camaraderie and sportsmanship filled the air,” he said. “Everyone was helping each other, either drilling holes in the ice for those without an ice auger to sharing bait with those that needed bait.”

In total, Orsini said 16 trout and about 40 other fish were caught, including bass, pickerel and perch.

“Prizes were awarded for the heaviest trout, the heaviest non-trout, the longest trout and the longest non-trout,” he said.

Orsini encouraged people to come down to Middle Pond to enjoy another great community event.

“It was a great time and we’re hoping to see people come back again this year,” he said. “We’re excited and we’re looking forward to it.”
