Merry Christmas, Disregard Your Tax Bills: Southington

Town officials said an error in supplemental tax bills sent out this week has resulted in new ones slated to be sent out next week.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Southington officials had a special Christmas present for taxpayers Wednesday, but it's not the gift of tax abatements.

Still, some taxpayers can tear up their recently received supplemental tax bills, which went out this week.

Southington Town Manager Alex Ricciardone issued a notice on Wednesday, Dec. 24, that an error on the supplemental tax bills resulted in the wrong mill rate being used.

"The supplemental motor vehicle tax bills mailed out earlier this week included an incorrect mill rate due to the Connecticut statewide statutory mill rate cap on motor vehicles," wrote Ricciardone in a message to taxpayers.

As a result, they're being asked to "please disregard the bill you received and do not use it for payment."

While most pay their taxes in the summer, supplemental bills are utilized for those who, say, purchase a vehicle after Oct. 1 of last year.

While being told to tear up your tax bill might seem like a holiday miracle, the joy will only last a week.

Ricciardone said corrected bills with the accurate information will be mailed next week.

In the meantime, taxpayers should hold off on any payments related to these supplemental bills to avoid issues, he said.

"We're truly sorry for any confusion or inconvenience this has caused—our team is working diligently to fix it. Thank you for your patience and understanding," wrote Ricciardone.
