Moped Rider, 13, Badly Hurt In Southington Crash: Police: UPDATE
Southington police are investigating a collision on Saturday between a vehicle and a moped.
SOUTHINGTON, CT — Local police are investigating a serious motor vehicle accident Saturday that left a 13-year-old moped operator fighting for life.
According to the Southington Police Department, the crash was first reported at 7:54 p.m. Saturday, May 24, when units were called to the Meriden Waterbury Turnpike (Route 322) at its intersection with Meriden Avenue and Pratt Street.
Upon arrival, responders determined the accident involved a motor vehicle and a moped.

In a subsequent update Sunday night, the SPD said the operator of the moped suffered "life-threatening injuries."

According to police, the investigation revealed that a Toyota Corolla was traveling west on Meriden Waterbury Turnpike, approaching the intersection of Meriden Avenue.
The Toyota stopped at the red light on Meriden Waterbury Turnpike at Meriden Ave.
Meanwhile, a moped was also traveling westbound on Meriden Waterbury Turnpike approaching the intersection of Meriden Avenue, police said.
"The moped passed several cars waiting at the red light in the westbound lane, driving on the shoulder of the roadway on Meriden Waterbury Turnpike," wrote the SPD Sunday night.
"When the traffic signal turned green, the above-mentioned Toyota Corolla began to take a right turn onto Meriden Avenue, when it struck the moped that was attempting to cross the intersection," wrote Southington police. "Due to the collision, the Juvenile operator of the moped suffered life-threatening injuries."

Police said the 13-year-old was transported to the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain and later transferred to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford.
The SPD said the operator of the Toyota was not injured and is fully cooperating with the investigation.
