Lucas Calvo, 30, of Berlin Street, entered a formal denial to the violation allegations during a hearing this week in New Britain Superior Court. He is being held on $25,000 bond and is due back in court on Aug. 16.

Calvo was first arrested in March 2017 and charged with first-degree assault with disfigurement, attempted first-degree assault with disfigurement, second-degree assault and intentional cruelty to persons.

He later took a plea deal in late 2018, pleading guilty to one count each of second-degree assault with intent to cause serious physical injury and intentional cruelty to persons, while all other charges were not pursued. Calvo was sentenced the following May to three years in prison, followed by three years of probation.

A judge ordered that, during the probationary period, Calvo would have a possible seven years of additional prison time hanging over his head if he were to violate any conditions.

The conviction stems from an arrest in March 2017 after police were called to the Days Inn hotel, at 30 Laning St., because Calvo was allegedly refusing to pay his bill.

According to the police report, officers then went to Calvo’s room and they found a woman in one of the beds. There was blood all over the comforter, and the woman had dried blood on her face and hair, the report continued. Her eyes were so badly bruised and swollen that they were completely shut. She also had a laceration above her left eye and dried blood in her ear canals.

Both Calvo and the victim told police she had sustained the injuries by falling in the room. According to police, the woman later opened up to officers about the incident, saying Calvo had punched her two times the night before and had beaten her in the past.

The woman was treated at the trauma center at Hartford Hospital, where she needed stitches to repair serious facial injuries. She also underwent a number of X-rays and CAT scans.
