Prom Too Expensive? Southington Community Services Can Help

Proms are expensive and one Southington agency has opened up a free prom shop to help teens with this rite of passage.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Springtime means prom season and that means one thing for teens and their parents — the wallet-draining spectacle of going.

Proms have never been cheap, but these days they're more like mini-weddings and by "weddings," we mean "expensive."

But one Southington agency actually has something to help teens and families, something they just might appreciate this prom season — the "Pop-Up Prom Shop."

And the cost for these items is pretty reasonable too. Free.

And it is available to all teens regardless of their financial situations, organizers said.

Depending on what study you look up or what financial article you read, the cost of attending a prom these days is anywhere from several hundred dollars to, even, a thousand bucks and up.

The extensive cost for this teenage rite of passage can definitely lighten the wallet and, for many, its simply a financially unattainable milestone.

Southington's "Pop-Up Prom Shop" is located at 91 Norton St., Plantsville. Parking is behind the building and signs will direct guests to the shop.

It opened Thursday, March 16, and continues to be open weekdays until Friday, March 24, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, March 25, it will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In addition to helping out teens with prom, the prom shop is also seeking donations from the community. Call the deparatment for more information on donations.

For those who can't make it to the prom shop during regular hours, appointments can be made by calling Southington Community Services at 860-628-3761.
