Respiratory Illnesses Increasing In Southington: Health Department

The South-Central Health District warned residents Tuesday to take precautions against the spread of myriad respiratory illnesses.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The local health department reported Tuesday an alarmingly high amount of respiratory illness in the Southington-Plainville-Middlefield area.

According to the Southington-based South-Central Health District, as of Jan. 5, the number of people seeking health care is at a very high level for the first time in the current 2025-26 season.

The regional health district serves the towns of Southington, Plainville, and Middlefield.

Respiratory illness activity in Connecticut is "very high" as measured by how frequently a wide variety of respiratory symptoms and conditions are diagnosed by emergency department doctors, ranging from the common cold to COVID-19, flu, and RSV, according to health officials.

"Seasonal influenza activity is elevated and continues to increase across the country," wrote the health district.

"RSV activity is elevated in many areas of the country, with emergency department visits and hospitalizations increasing among children 0-4 years old."
