Heavy Snowfall Mars Morning Commute in South Windsor

There have been reports of five accidents, including one requiring an extrication from a vehicle, within just one hour.

The heavy snowfall made for a treacherous morning commute Friday, as South Windsor emergency personnel responded to numerous reports of car accidents, including one that required the extrication of one passenger from a vehicles.

The accident requiring the extrication took place around 9 a.m. on John Fitch Boulevard at Mascolo Road, according to Chief of Police Matthew Reed.

One person, who complained of a head injury, was taken by the Ambulance Service of Manchester to St. Francis Hospital, while another was taken by South Windsor Ambulance Corps to Hartford Hospital, Reed said.

South Windsor police and South Windsor Volunteer Fire Department personnel also responded to the call, Reed said.

Traffic was still moving on John Fitch Boulevard, though the road had been reduced to 1 lane each way, according to the fire department's Facebook page.

Reed said that it had been a busy morning, with police responding to 14 weather-related calls since 4:30 a.m., including five calls within a 1-hour period.

Reed urged that people use caution when traveling this morning.

“We’re looking forward around noontime for the snow to stop, but if folks can hold off driving until then I think it will be much safer travel,” Reed said. “The roads are just slushy.”
