South Windsor Public Schools Will Be Closed on Monday

Although snow removal efforts have nearly all of South Windsor's roads open, town officials determined that sidewalks and bus routes are still to dangerous. A parking ban remains in effect.

South Windsor public schools will be closed on Monday, Feb. 11, according to an announcement late Sunday afternoon.

The decision was made despite nearly every road in South Windsor having been at least partially cleared by the town's department of public works or contractors.

According to Chief of Police Matthew Reed, town crews are discovering challenges in areas where contract crews didn't do all of the work expected.

In addition, there are issues of course with piling the snow at the ends of cul de sacs and corners, Reed said, and sight lines are limited.

There are reports of residents becoming frustrated that driveways and sidewalks are getting blocked as a result of the snow clearing in the streets. Town Manager Matthew Galligan said early Sunday morning that he hopes residents understand that the work is necessary and that he understands residents' frustration.

Town crews will work until at least 5 p.m. and some contract crews may remain beyond that, Reed said.

The forecast, according to Reed, is calling for possible precipitation in the early morning which will require recall of crews to further treat roads.

"In the coming days, work will include widening roads further, improving sight lines and clearing high priority walkways," Reed said.
