South Windsor Town Council Approves Purchase of Parcel for Open Space

Property located at 491 King St. purchased for $135,000.

The South Windsor Town Council on Monday unanimously approved the purchase of the property at 491 King St. for $135,000 for the purpose of preserving it as open space.

According to Town Manager Matthew Galligan, the 11-acre parcel was highly recommended for acquisition by the town’s Open Space Task Force.

Galligan noted that there is a pond on the property that is stocked with fish, making the parcel ideal for recreational purposes.

In addition, the property “creates a pocket” for neighbors who want to ensure that no development takes place in that area.

“[The property] is something we have been looking at for some time,” Galligan said.

The parcel had initially been offered to the town for around $500,000 before the price eventually came down to what the town believed was appropriate to acquire it, Galligan said.

The money used to purchase the parcel are used from an Open Space fund, which has more than $2 million left in it, according to Galligan.

The matter has been referred to the Planning & Zoning Commission for final review.
