South Windsor Town Manager: 'Strong Reason for Optimism' in Hi-G Building Redevelopment

Building that has laid vacant for 20 years was the subject of redevelopment meeting held Wednesday.

The South Windsor Redevelopment Commission met Wednesday concerning the property located at 85 Nutmeg Road - better known as the Hi-G Building.

But if residents are looking for answers concerning the recent activity around the building, they will have to wait a little while longer.

The commission went into executive session immediately after it convened at Town Hall.

Town Manager Matthew Galligan said that the reason for the executive session was for legal reasons - both for pending litigation and also for negotiations.

“We’re trying something new on a building that has been empty for 20 years,” Galligan said. “We’re trying to get a redevelopment plan set up so the building can be a positive asset to the town. Right now, that’s all I can say.”

Galligan did say that, while the property has seen its share of promising plans fall through throughout the years, there was reason for optimism concerning the latest developments.

“I think there is strong reason for optimism,” he said. “There is something optimistic happening and we feel we [the town] should get involved and make sure it happens because it will benefit the community.”

Galligan said that there was a relatively aggressive timeline associated with whatever is taking place at the Hi-G Building, within a 30- to 90-day window.

During that time, Galligan said there would be public meetings by the Redevelopment Commission and the Planning and Zoning Commission, among other town agencies.

“We think the community has waited long enough,” Galligan said.
