Swastikas, Newtown References Spray-Painted on South Windsor High School

Chief of Police Matthew Reed said that police were investigating who was responsible for the messages.

Police discovered swastikas, references to the Newtown shootings and anti-Obama comments spray-painted on South Windsor High School early Friday morning.

Chief of Police Matthew Reed said that officers were investigating who was responsible for the hate messages, which were primarily scrawled on the school’s wall facing Ayers Road.

“It happens from time to time, and it’s upsetting to see,” Reed said.

Workers were seen power washing the messages off the buildings at 8:30 a.m., just prior to the 42nd annual Imperial Egg Hunt, a popular town-wide event that drew thousands of people to the South Windsor High stadium.

One message that was still visible at 8:30 a.m. read, “Micro Laser Satellite.” The word “Obama” was also barely visible on another portion of the high school. Those messages have since been cleaned off the building.

Reed said that no suspects had been identified as of yet, but that there was a dance at the high school on Thursday night. Reed declined to say whether he believed that students who attended the dance were responsible for the messages.

Part of the investigation will involve reviewing video surveillance of both inside and outside of the school, Reed said.

Reed said that it was not unusual - though not necessarily an ongoing issue - to have the high school defaced around graduation time.
