World-Famous New Haven Pizzeria May Be Opening South Windsor Location

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — The agenda for Tuesday night's meeting of the South Windsor Planning and Zoning Commission includes discussion on a proposed site plan modification for a 5,000 square-foot restaurant at Evergreen Walk, which reportedly could mean the opening of a new location for one of the top-rated pizza establishments in the country.

A document filed by owner/applicant O'Evergreen LLC, proposing modification of a plan approved by the PZC in October, would accommodate a pizza restaurant. The document includes a reference to Sally's Apizza, considered to be among "The Holy Trinity" of New Haven pizzerias alongside Frank Pepe's and Modern Apizza.

Ranked number one on "my official Top Ten pizza places in the world" by Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports, Sally's has been an institution on Wooster Street in New Haven since its founding by Salvatore "Sally" Consiglio in 1938. It has been frequented by world-renowned celebrities such as Frank Sinatra and John F. Kennedy, and has been featured in publications such as USA Today, the Washington Post, Forbes magazine, Esquire and Boston.com.

It is famous for its distinctive sauce and crispy, yet chewy crust with "an iconic oven-kissed char," a recipe still in use today.

A representative for Sally's has yet to return an email from Patch seeking confirmation of the possible South Windsor site. However, the pizzeria's website lists eight "target Northeast development markets," with Manchester listed among them. Evergreen Walk is literally steps from the Manchester town line.

New locations have already been announced for various towns within Connecticut and Massachusetts, including Westfarms Mall in Farmington, Wethersfield and Norwalk this year, and Newington and Boston Seaport in 2025.

The Evergreen Walk site plan approved last fall, on the corner of Cedar Avenue and Buckland Road, also includes a 2,375 square-foot Chipotle and a 2,400 square-foot Starbucks. Construction is underway on all three buildings.
