WILLINGTON, CT — The Connecticut Democracy Center at Connecticut’s Old State House created the Meet the Candidates Traveling Exhibit to highlight students who ran for Connecticut’s Kid Governor this school year and their important platforms. The exhibit is traveling to schools across the state and is visiting Willington Public Library.

The Meet the Candidates exhibit showcases school Nominees for Kid Governor, members of
the Kid Governor’s Cabinet, and the elected Kid Governor. Each panel includes a brief
biography of a student, information about the student’s community issue and why it is important,
and the student’s three-point plan of action. Meet the Candidates was open to all students who
ran for Kid Governor and this year’s exhibit features 30 student panels. The exhibit also includes
lesson plans focused on civic action.

Meet the Candidates will be at Willington Public Library through Aug. 31.

During the fall of 2022, 9,400 fifth graders from across the state participated in the Connecticut’s
Kid Governor® program. Students learned about state government, elections, and the
importance of civic engagement in our communities through this award-winning civics program
created by The Connecticut Democracy Center at Connecticut’s Old State House. In November,
the fifth graders elected Elisavet “Ellie” Mendez, a student at Monroe Elementary School in
Monroe, as the 2023 Connecticut’s Kid Governor®. The program is presented with funding and
partnership support from CT Humanities the Gawlicki Family Foundation, and in partnership with
the Connecticut Council for the Social Studies. Learn more at CT.KidGovernor.org.
