UNION, CT — Nestled between an interstate highway and a busy state road, one would think Morey Pond would be well-known to most travelers. However, it remains an almost undiscovered treasure, save for a single sign on a speedy downhill section of Route 190 in Connecticut's least populous municipality - truly a Hidden Gem.

Located within the Nipmuck State Forest, the 44.8-acre pond is accessible via a 0.3-mile gravel entrance road. Once the water comes into view, one's eye is drawn to the boat launch to the left, where canoes, kayaks and small boats are put into the pond for outdoors enthusiasts to enjoy fishing or just relaxing.

Morey Pond is the origin of the Mount Hope River, which flows about 15 miles south to the Mansfield Hollow Lake. The pond and its shore contain many native plants and aquatic animals, and an inlet in the south part of the water, just across the town line of Ashford, contains a beaver lodge.
