Willington Budget Referendum - Round 2

17 June 2025

To all Willington taxpayers:

So here we go again with another referendum regarding our town & education budget. I am not writing to suggest that you vote for or against this budget. But I do want to provide some factual data regarding the budget.

I requested and received from the Willington assessor revaluation data on 1,912 residential properties. These data contain the pre- and post-revaluation assessments for these 1,912 properties. Due to the revaluation and the latest proposed budget (round 2), my analysis revealed the following:
  • 240 properties will NOT see a property tax higher than last year*.
  • 216 properties will see a 0% to 3.5% INCREASE in this coming tax bill.
  • 390 properties will see a 3.5% to 8% INCREASE in this coming tax bill.
  • 894 properties will see a 8% to 25% INCREASE in this coming tax bill.
  • 156 properties will see a 25% to 100% INCREASE in this coming tax bill.
  • 16 properties will see an increase greater than 100%*.

* - Many of these properties’ assessments have either been affected by by faulty foundations OR were previously assessed as a lot that did not contain a dwelling unit and now does.

Many of Willington’s commercial properties (e.g. FedEx, Love’s, T/A etc.) will be realizing a substantial savings in 2025 over their 2024 tax bill. FedEx in particular will be enjoying a $21,160± decrease over 2024. These properties benefit from revaluation simply because Commercial property values increased very little since the previous revaluation.

The math is not complicated. If your property is one of the 894, multiply last year’s tax bill by 1.08 to 1.25 to estimate your yet-to-be-received 2025 tax bill. Keep in mind that this does NOT apply to motor vehicle taxes.

It’s up to you to decide if you can support this budget next Tuesday, June 17th.
