Stamford CAPT Scores Slip from Last Year, Still Improve Overall

Stamford tenth-graders saw overall improvement on their Connecticut Academic Performance Test scores since 2007, but many times saw a slip in scores compared to the previous year, according to numbers published Thursday at CTReports.com.

Across the board, Stamford's scores were behind the Connecticut average. The slips matched a statewide trend of improvement overall but slight setbacks from the immediately preceding year.

City-wide, by Subject

In Science, less that 35-percent of students were meeting the citywide standards set, and less than three-quarters were at proficiency. Roughly three percentage points were lost in proficiency from the previous year.

In the subject of Mathematics, students saw improvement from the first year, and a slight increase from the previous year's numbers, though the scores still lagged in comparison to state-wide scores.

Reading took a heavy hit, falling behind even the starting mark set in 2007, and drastically falling six percentage points in proficiency.

And in Writing, though the numbers were returned slightly lower than the previous year, Stamford tenth-graders kept a strong showing. More than 85-percent were proficient and more than 50-percent achieving the overall goal.

Breaking down the numbers by School, the showed the strongest gains overall, reporting high percentage improvements in proficiency since the beginning of testing, but also taking 10- and 6-point hits in reading and writing since the previous year.

Compared to other districts regionally, Stamford finished behind many of its neighbors and roughly ten points behind state averages overall. Only Norwalk's scores were lower.
