Stamford Police Warn Of Fake ICE Calls In Identity Theft Scam
The Stamford Police Department said people across the country have been receiving calls that appear to come from its dispatch phone number.
STAMFORD, CT — Stamford police are warning residents about a nationwide phone scam in which callers are impersonating the department’s dispatch center and claiming to represent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The Stamford Police Department said it has learned that people across the country have been receiving calls that appear to come from its dispatch phone number. The callers ask for personally identifiable information and claim to be calling on behalf of ICE, police said.
The SPD said the calls did not originate from Stamford police and are believed to be part of an identity theft scheme in which scammers use technology to "spoof" or disguise a phone number so it appears to be from a legitimate law enforcement agency.
