Retired Union Baptist minister Ken Carpenter found a way to start a homeless shelter when the right reason showed up on the church's front stairs.
Ken Carpenter, a Mystic resident, was recently inducted into the due to his service in the Navy and his many community contributions. Carpenter is the founder of the for families with children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Carpenter said the shelter has helped more than 850 families in its 12 years of operation.
