30,000-Gallon Water Tank on Route 81 Undergoing Installation

Ever seen one of these blue and white signs with a "W" on them?

Killingworth Volunteer Fire Co. shared a bit of trivia with its Facebook followers recently.

"People often wonder what the sign with a big blue 'W' means," they wrote. "These signs represent a common terminology across our area to signify a Fire Dept. water source for those not serviced by fire hydrants. These signs mark ponds, streams and underground tanks used by fire departments."

Killingworth presently has more than one million gallons of water buried underground, firefighters said.

"KVFC is in a very fortunate position to have had a strong longtime relationship with the Town's Planning and Zoning Board to plan for the water supply needs in case of a fire," the fire company wrote. "The pictures [above] are of a brand new 30,000 gallon water tank being installed in the 'Old Coach' subdivision on Route 81, just north of the Clinton line."
