Forget-Me-Not

One of the nice things about having a blog is that it offers me, as a writer, a place to utilize small pieces of writing that don't have anywhere else to go! This is something I wrote a few years ago...

My mother reminded me recently that my grandmother’s favorite flowers were forget-me-nots. It seems ironic that I could have forgotten that. Her thin gold wedding band was detailed with intricate carvings of the petite flowers, symbolizing my grandparents’ love for each other that lasted well over 50 years of marriage. It seems even more poignant now, that symbol, especially after having lost my grandmother 11 years ago this month. Interestingly, I was reminded of her preference in the month that she passed and, coincidentally, when the vibrant blueish violet-colored flowers have begun to appear everywhere. Coincidence? Or, something more meaningful and perhaps sacred?

Forget-me-nots, those pretty little purpleish-blue flowers with vivid green foliage, are springing up this year all over our yard- in the grass, in the flowerbeds, in the wooded areas. They have become silent love notes to me from my grandmother, little earthly reminders that she hasn’t forgotten me. Nor, have I forgotten her. Moments like these, when realized, are sacred reminders that hint at something bigger than our selves and go beyond our daily tribulations of earthly existence.

My children run laughing and barefoot in the grass, hopping over the little buds, their childhood being captured forever in the protective recesses of my mind. I am reminded in this moment to hold close the Sacred of the every day. Children grow up in the blink of an eye, loved ones are lost too soon and our hearts and souls swell under the constant fluctuation and meanings of why we are here, what our purpose is and how we can weave it all together before we’ve forgotten what’s really important in life; before it’s too late and the moment is gone forever.

Sacredness needs to be cultivated in the gardens of the heart and soul. We need to be reminded to unearth the sacred of the every day, to not forget.
