Niantic Childcare Center Announces Abrupt Closure: Reports

A Niantic daycare that's been in operation for 38 years announced it will close soon, leaving parents scrambling.

NIANTIC, CT — A childcare center announced it is closing abruptly, leaving parents scrambling to make alternate arrangements, according to NBC CT.

The Niantic Community Church Children’s Center is a small, non-profit early childhood program.

Parents of children at the center said they received a letter last month stating that the center will close in June, NBC CT reported.

Then on Tuesday, the closing date was bumped up to Friday, March 14. One parent called it a "shock," saying they were left with only eight business days to make alternate arrangements, NBC CT reported.

However, this schedule did not comply with state law, which mandates 30 days' notice for closure. So school officials said the closing would instead be April 6, The Day of New London reported.

The center provides "a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment to children between the ages of 6 weeks and 5 years," according to its website.

The program was founded in 1983 "in response to the overwhelming need for quality care and education in our community," the website reads.

The school, which serves about 20 students, is closing as the church can no longer afford to underwrite its operations, The Day reported. There are also reports of a "hostile environment" between the school's acting director and preschool staff.
