Old Lyme Student Awarded National Merit Scholarship

OLD LYNE, CT — The National Merit Scholarship Program has announced this year's $2,500 scholarship winners, including an Old Lyme student.

The 2,500 winners were chosen from a pool of 15,000 finalists. The awards were selected based on an evaluation of their accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in college.

Christopher B. Gibbons, who attends Lyme-Old Lyme High School and has a probable career field of linguistics, was awarded one of the scholarships.

A committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors selected the winners.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation funds the single-payment $2,500 scholarships.

This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2023 when high school juniors took the PSAT/NMSQT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named semifinalists on a state-representational basis.

More than 16,000 semifinalists had an opportunity to continue in the competition.
