A Piece from Tolland History: The Scorp

The scorp (or “scorper”) was a tool used in the 1800s to make wooden bowls. A craftsman would cut the round burl off of a tree, burn out an area in the center, and then use the scorp to carefully carve out the remaining wood, leaving a sturdy vessel behind. The scorp was originally a tool used by the Indians to hollow out canoes.  It was modeled after a similar English tool called an adze.
