Town Hall Hands Out No. 1 Tolland Dog Tag

Residents hoping for the coveted top spot for their canine companions had to try their luck drawing tags out of a basket.

Tolland officially has a new top dog, after residents vied for the No. 1 dog license at town hall Monday morning.

Pearl, owned by resident Nicola Kennedy, was the lucky winner, even though Kennedy said she wasn't trying to grab the No. 1 spot.

According to Kennedy, she made a point to show up early this year because she almost forget to renew her license last year.

Last year's No. 1 dog owner, Jan Peacock, walked away with the No. 2 spot, but she said that her Australian cattle dog mix Maggie will give away her top title gracefully.

"As long as she gets to wear her tag and go out on a walk, she'll be ok," Peacock said.

Assistant Town Clerk Suzanne Litwin said that the clerk's office has developed a strategy to give owners a fair shot at the top title; the first ten tags are placed into a basket, face down, and owners are allowed to draw tags at random as they show up to register.

She said that the office has been handing out the dog tags this way for approximately four to five years.
