TOLLAND, CT — Of all the hiking venues in north central Connecticut, this one doesn't get the accolades it deserves.

That might be because it's fairly hidden. OK ... very hidden.

It's the Becker Conservation Area in Tolland.

Becker encompasses a network of trails spanning 28.5 acres on the northerly boundary of River Park off of South River Road.

The property was purchased in 2010 from Lawrence Becker using both active and passive open space funds. More than 11 acres on the easterly side of the property along the Willimantic River are one major highlight of the network.

The trails have variety — including some steepish slopes in some sections that drop down to the Willimantic. In all, there is 1,200 feet of accessible frontage along the river.

The trail system reaches an elevation of 380 feet with a steep ridge paralleling the

river at the northern section.

Most of the land is covered by a mature White Pine forest mixed with some oaks.
