TOLLAND, CT — This week's Hidden Gem is a sentinel that greets visitors at the state police Troop C barracks.

His nickname among some media types has been "Trooper C" over the years and he stands in the corner of the lobby.

"I'm not sure when it showed up. It was there when I was there as the troop lieutenant (2004 to 2007)," said former state police commander and current Enfield police chief Alaric Fox. "I suspect it was donated, but I don’t know by whom."

Alas, some research by the state police public information office determined that the statue was fashioned by John Basch, who was a resident of Ellington and passed away in 2013. Basch gifted the statute to Troop C when the new barracks opened on Tolland Stage Road in 1995.

Troop C was previously on Route 190 in Stafford.

The name badge on the statue says "Forst."

Said Fox, "Forst is undoubtedly a reference to Lester Forst. He was a rather iconic colonel/commissioner who had worked his way up in the ranks, back when one person could hold both jobs. I heard him as a guest speaker in probably 2009."

State police said Forst served as colonel from 1981 to 1983, then later commissioner from 1983 to 1989.
