Tolland Athlete Named Female Athlete of the Year

Caitlin Swanson does cross country and track at Tolland High School.

Swanson was selected from a pool of 28 All-Courant Players/Athletes of the Year in their sports, which were picked after the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Swanson made the All-Courant team in outdoor track and cross country, and was the All-Courant indoor track athlete of the year this winter.

She and her team had an amazing year.

During the school year, Swanson’s teams were perfect in state championship appearances, winning the three State Open titles and three Class M titles.

Swanson finished the cross country season second at the Class M championship and 13th at the State Open. In indoor track, she won Class M championships in the 1,600 and 3,200, and scored 12 points in at the Open (fourth in the 1,600 and second in the 3,200).

At the Class M outdoor championship, Swanson won the 3,200 in a meet record time of 10:48.96 and the 1,600 in 5:02.70.

At the New England championship, she ran her first 4x800 relay of the season to help Tolland win the race and set the state record. At the New Balance Nationals in North Carolina, she helped Tolland set another state record in the 4x1 mile relay and finish fourth in the distance medley relay.

The 4x1 mile was the 17th best time ever run by a high school girls team nationally and the 4x800 record broke a 10-year old mark in Connecticut.
