VERNON, CT — The Rockville High School girls lacrosse team, its coach and other North Central Connecticut Conference programs were teaming up Friday to fight food insecurity.

It's the RHS-NCCC Girls Lacrosse Fill the Net to Fight Hunger event, the creation of Ram head coach Charlie Chatterton. He and some of his players gathered at RHS early Friday morning to toss the ball 200 times before Chatterton embarked on a 50-mile bicycle trek from the Rockville stadium to Ellington High School, Somers High School, Suffield High School, Granby's Salmon Brook Park and Canton High School.

Chatterton planned to take 200 shots at each location with either players or via a rebounder and then get back on his bike to head for the next location.

Lacrosse goals were set up for food donations at stops with proceeds going to the Hockanum Valley Community Council and Cornerstone Foundation food programs. As of Friday morning, Chatterton had also raised $1,900 in donations for Connecticut Foodshare.

His wife, Carol, a teacher in the Vernon public school system, drove the chase car and collected donations along the way.

Donations can be arranged through the Rockville High School athletic department.

"It was a great day to throw the lacrosse ball around and do some bicycling around the state," Chatterton said. "The funds raised should benefit many families."
