Occupation:
Retired - 10 years at Yale Law School, 20 years at the City of New Haven
Family:
I have two adult children. My son, Colby, works in retail management and enjoys playing basketball, fishing, and working on his car. My daughter, Cristina, retired from the U.S. Army as a Captain and now serves in the Army Reserves as a Major. She is also a senior project manager at ThermoFisher Scientific. She and Shawna, a Sergeant in the Army, live in Hawaii with their four children: Zane, Abel, Zoey and Leah.
Does anyone in your family work in politics or government?
No.
Previous public office, appointive or elective:
I was a member of the Natural Resources and Open Space Commission in Hamden in the early 2000s.
Why are you seeking this office?
I have lived in West Haven for nearly 20 years, and in that time, I have seen our taxes increase and our level of services decrease. I have also watched the various administrations turn a blind eye to serious problems in our city, including the waste treatment plant and related infrastructure issues.
The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ____, and this is what I intend to do about it:
ever-rising taxes, and I plan to look for ways to cut spending in the city while increasing any available forms of revenue. All of us are trying to do more with less, and the city budget doesn't reflect that.
What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?
I am very involved in my community. I have been a member of the Sandy Point Neighborhood Association since its inception in 2021, and I have served on the board for the past three years. We sponsor cleanups in area parks and along littered roadways, we advocate for appropriate development in our shorefront neighborhood, and we represent our neighbors at City Council and Water Pollution Control Commission meetings. We also partner with Savin Rock Community School and West Haven Little League. I am retired, so I have the time and energy to devote to the residents of the 2nd District.
What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?
In addition to city-wide fiscal responsibility, neighborhood cleanliness and beautification are very important to me. Prior to the formation of the Sandy Point Neighborhood Association, I would frequently walk the neighborhood and pick up trash and debris. In addition to continuing district-wide cleanups and fighting blight, I am interested in encouraging economic development along our shoreline and beautifying the gateways to our city. I would also like to pursue grant funding for a "city flower" program, in which homeowners are encouraged to plant a specific flower that is representative of West Haven. In addition to making the city more attractive, this would be a community-building activity.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
I have held municipal managerial positions in the past, so I am experienced with city budgeting. I am also extremely well-organized and responsive to people's needs. As a recent retiree, I have the time and energy to devote to this important job. Since I regularly attend City Council meetings, I can hit the ground running.
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
My father always stressed the importance of spending less than you make. This advice has stuck with me throughout my life.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
As a relative newcomer to West Haven (only 20 years!), I owe no favors. I will be responsive to my constituents and be beyond reproach. I am not a politician -- I am a resident, I am a taxpayer, I am your neighbor.
