Occupation:
Outreach and Grants Manager, 4 years
Family:
I am married to my husband Sean, and together we have two daughters, Paige (16) and Jocelyn (14). Both girls are students in our district.
Previous public office, appointive or elective:
Yes, I am currently a member of our Board of Education and am seeking re-election.
Why are you seeking this office?
I have always enjoyed advocating for the schools. I feel here in West Haven we have the best staff, students, families, and community. In my role as a member of the Board of Education, I am committed to ensuring we continue to strive for excellence, to recruit and retain the best educators for our students, and to make sure our students have what they need both in and out of the classroom to be successful.
The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ____, and this is what I intend to do about it:
The single most pressing issue facing our constituents is continuing the growth that this administration has implemented. We are on a great trajectory with development in our city, and that directly impacts the students and school community. West Haven has always been a great place to live and work, and I think continuing to offer quality education is a driving factor for families looking to move into our city.
What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?
I am proud to have two students in our district. I enjoy attending events that are offered to families and students in our district, and seeing them through the lens of both a parent and a board member. My experience as a parent of students in this district gives me a unique perspective and insight into the daily life of a WH student. Additionally, I worked as a paraprofessional in West Haven prior to being elected to the board so I have a good understanding of the needs of our faculty and staff.
What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?
Along with our board members, I hope that we can continue to work with the district coordinators to explore our curricula, and identify opportunities for showcasing the things that West Haven Public Schools is doing well.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
During my current term, I worked with district administrators and coordinators to explore our curriculum. I supported the presentation of iReady for our math curriculum, and evaluated the implementation and selection of Benchmark ELA curriculum. Additionally, I worked to advocate for our students on all levels, and ensured that all curriculum was able to be differentiated for all learning levels.
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
The best advice anyone ever gave me came from my dad. He always taught me to stand behind my beliefs, to be strong in my opinion, and to earn the respect of those around me.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
I am proud to be a resident of West Haven, to be a former student and staff member of our schools, and to have two children in our district. I look forward to continuing my work on the board and hope that my work thus far has earned the support of the community.
