HARTFORD, CT — Entering Sunday's Class L boys soccer championship game at Dillon Stadium, the histories of the two competitors could not be more different. Wethersfield has the most state titles of any school with 15, while Fitch had never even been to the finals before.

By the end of 80 minutes of action, the Eagles had extended their record to 16 championships, as they drubbed the Falcons 4-1. It was Wethersfield's first state crown since 2008.

Neither team dented the scoreboard in the first half, but the Eagles came out of the locker room flying after intermission, as Josh Gstell scored what proved to be the only goal they would need less than six minutes after play resumed. William McCarter earned an assist on the goal.

About 20 minutes later, Thomas Brodowicz converted a nice pass from Samuel Johnson to give Wethersfield some breathing room. Fitch would not quit, however, reducing the deficit back to one just 23 seconds later on a header by Doug Cardona.

Joseph Tata restored the 2-goal margin two minutes later, and Giankarlos DeJesus added the clincher on a penalty kick with 5:12 remaining.
