Feuding Brothers and a $13,000 Jewelry Thief

The following information was obtained from the Wilton Police Department for the week of June 30-July 5. Arrest information does not indicate a conviction. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Man arrested for $13,000 Avalon Springs Robbery

6/30:  In March of this year, a unit in the Avalon Springs apartment complex had $13,000 worth of jewelry stolen from it while the residents were vacationing. Police arrested Jason Sagnella, 32, of East Haven, for this crime after they linked two stolen jewelry items to his name after Sagnella allegedly tried to pawn them at a New Haven pawnshop. Police said Sagnella was arrested after appearing in court for another crime. Police charged Sagnella with second degree larceny; he is being held under a $25,000 bond, according to police.

6/26: An investigation led to the identification of an elderly male driver who had left the scene of an accident after smacking a parked vehicle with his vehicle’s bumper, police said. Police charged the man, Anthony Hemming, 73, of Wilton, with evading responsibility with damage to property and driving unreasonably fast, according to the reports.

7/3: Officers responded to a domestic disturbance on New Canaan Road. Officers summoned a forty-one year old man to Norwalk court on a disorderly conduct charge for damages to the home, according to the reports. The report did not specify the damages.

Feuding brothers

7/2: Ryan Fernandez, 22, of Ridgefield, allegedly struck his brother “repeatedly” on the back of the neck while the two brothers were sitting in a parked car while their mother was at the wheel, according to the police report. Fernandez was in the back seat while his brother was sitting shotgun. Police said that the two brothers had some kind of ongoing dispute, and that the brother who had been struck, age 19, called the police. Fernandez was charged with breach of peace and given a promise to appear in court.

I have a five-year-old warrant?

7/1: Five years ago, a one Michael Torbiak, hailing from Hollywood, California, visited Wilton, perhaps to see a friend, police said. During his 2004 tenure, Torbiak was arrested for possession of narcotics after he had been found trespassing around the reservoir at Old Huckleberry Road, police said. Torbiak then went back to California, and apparently forgot about the five-year-old warrant, until he visited Wilton this year and subsequently turned himself in, police said. Torbiak, now 25, was processed and given a same-day-of-court, according to the reports.

DUI:

7/5: Police said they pulled over a vehicle for travelling 62 in a 40 mph zone. Upon subsequent inspection, police said they found the driver, Jason Fragoso, 30, of Naugatuck, to be intoxicated. Police said that Fragoso was unable to perform a sobriety rest and was taken into custody. He was arrested for speeding and DUI. He was released with a promise to appear in court.

7/3: Police noticed a vehicle driving erratically on Danbury road and pulled the vehicle over, according to the police report. Subsequent inspection found that the operator was under 21 years of age and that beer cans were lying around in the vehicle, according to the report. Police charged the driver, Adam Geriak, 20, of Bethel, with DUI, DUI under 21, failure to drive right, and possession of liquor by a minor. He was released and given a promise to appear in court.

7/1: Police pulled a vehicle over after police observed the vehicle was driving with its brights on. When the vehicle was stopped, police said they smelled alcohol wafting out from the vehicle. Police administered “several” sobriety tests to Christine Bilbao, 41, of Weston, before taking her into custody, according to the reports. She was also found to be driving a vehicle with an expired registration, police said.  Reports indicate that Bilbao was charged with DUI, improper use of high beams, and operating an unregistered motor vehicle. She was released on a promise to appear in court.

Money found

7/4: A small amount of money was found at the Athletic Complex after the fireworks event. It can be claimed at the Wilton Police Department.
