To be Paved: The Worst Roads in Wilton
A strained budget has made it so only the worst of the worst Wilton roads can be fixed.

After a brutal winter, dozens of Wilton roads are now riddled with pot holes and cracked pavement, sending Wiltonian drivers for a headache-inducing ride among placid scenery. While the Board of Selectmen know that bad roads are high on the list of aggravations for Wilton citizens, they are also faced with the task of patching up with a very strained budget.
“[Damaged roads] have been the number one complaint we’ve been getting for the past couple months,” said First Selectman William Brennan during Monday’s Board of Selectmen meeting.
“Satisfying everyone is an impossibility….The worst roads are getting fixed first,” Brennan said.

Exacerbating the funding deficit is the fact that, according to Brennan, asphalt has shot up to $98 a ton, up from $70 a ton in 2010. General paving costs have increased by 8.3 percent. The result is that less miles, and less roads, can be paved, said the Board.
The plan is to “not pave roads from one end to the other,” according to Brennan. The worst parts of the worst roads will be patched up or re-milled.

There are 128 miles of roads in Wilton to be cared for, said Brennan, which also means that there is no room for “decorative paving.”
