Wilton Selectmen Approve Security Task Force

A new task force commissioned by the Wilton Board of Selectmen will be charged making sure the town's students, school staff and town employees are safer.

On Monday, the selectman unanimously approved the Wilton Security Task Force, which will consist of nine members appointed to two-year terms, subject to term limits, according to Selectman Hal Clark.

The task force will consist of three representatives from Wilton schools, a senior officer at the police department, a member of the Board of Selectmen and four citizen volunteers "with skills in public safety, security, law enforcement, emergency management or strategy development," according to the document approved by the selectmen.

The task force's objectives are as follows:

• Assess the current status of safety and security in Wilton's schools and public facilities
• Analyze identified areas in which security gaps or shortfalls exist and need remediation
• Recommend balanced security practices and solutions to further enhance safety and security
• Assess new technology, systems and products, make cost/benefit assessments and provide recommendations that support Wilton security enhancement objectives
• Promote security educational programs that strengthen relationships between school administrators and emergency response personnel to create a safe school and community environment
• Educate Wilton organizations and the community on best security procedures

The task force will conduct its meetings in public like all other town government bodies, and "will provide periodic reports and action recommendations to the Board of Selectmen and also to the Board of Education."
